Background

edit

In the 2024 Saxony state election, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) managed to retain its position as the largest party despite slight losses in vote share. The election saw the emergence of new political forces with the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) entering the state parliament for the first time, capturing 12% of the vote and 15 seats. The incumbent coalition, which included the CDU, Greens, and SPD, lost its majority due to significant losses for the Greens, who barely crossed the 5% threshold needed for parliamentary representation.[1]

The formation of a new government proved challenging. Initially, there were attempts to form a blackberry coalition consisting of the CDU, BSW, and SPD, but these talks failed due to disagreements on state finances, migration policies, and the War in Ukraine.[2] Eventually, a minority coalition between the CDU and SPD was negotiated, with Michael Kretschmer of the CDU being re-elected as Minister-President on December 18, 2024.[3] This coalition, however, depended on support from other parties for legislative measures, as it held only 51 seats out of the 120 available, 10 short of a majority.
